ABOUT
Olivia Køppe is a danish composer based in Oslo. She has composed for a wide variety of projects and ensembles including orchestral and chamber music, multimedia, electroacoustic music, installations and music for theater and film.
A common thread in her music is a focus on timbres and textures and trying to create a sonic synthesis between instruments, and/or extramusical sounds, constantly moving between tension and stasis. She works closely with the inherent qualities of the individual instruments, exploring ways to create new techniques and sounds in close collaboration with the musicians. In her more recent pieces she has extended her practice to include archive material such as videos, audio recordings and texts, taking a special interest in themes around astronomy, space travel and star gazing. By using found material that relates to historical, scientific and cultural perceptions of the universe, her pieces seeks to contemplate on the position of the small individual in relation to the vastness of space.
Her pieces have been performed by ensembles such as the Oslo Philharmonic, Norbotten NEO, The Norwegian Wind Ensemble, TampereRaw, Duo Akse, Arepo, Uppsala Kammarsolister, and has been performed in Europe and USA. She has been selected twice for the Young Nordic Music festival, and in 2024 she was the first recipient of the Skovly Scholarship handed out by Olav Anton Thommessen and Skovlystiftelsen. Køppe has studied composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music and Gotland School of Composition. In 2025, she completed her master’s degree at the Norwegian Academy of Music studying with Kristine Tjøgersen, culminating in the project Composing Cosmos.
Køppe is also a producer and organizer of new music concerts in Oslo and the chair of the Norwegian board of Ung Nordisk Musikk (UNM).
