MOON TRAVEL: TITAN (2026)

There is no strong evidence either for or against life on Titan. It is merely possible.

Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, is an icy world whose surface is completely obscured by a golden, hazy atmosphere. On the surface, methane rain falls from cloudless skies. Rivers, great lakes, and waterfalls filled with liquid methane and ethane sculpt the landscape. Extremely Low Frequency waves suggest that beneath Titan’s surface there is a vast ocean. This means that Titan has the potential for two kinds of life: life as we do not know it in the rivers and lakes, and life as we know it in the ocean beneath the surface.

In 2005, the Huygens probe touched down on Titan, becoming the most distant spacecraft landing to date. The tape in this piece consists of a mix of actual recordings, sonifications of radar data, and radio signals captured during and after the probe’s landing.
